Semi-Frameless Shower Enclosure Installation

Semi-Frameless Shower Doors — The Smart Middle Ground for DFW Bathrooms

All the clean lines and modern feel of a frameless enclosure — at a price point that makes sense for more budgets. Built in-house, installed right.

Not every bathroom renovation needs a fully frameless shower door. Semi-frameless enclosures are one of the most practical upgrades a DFW homeowner can make: they eliminate the bulky aluminum rails that date a standard framed door, deliver a noticeably cleaner look, and cost significantly less than going fully frameless.

The design principle is simple. A top rail — minimal and close-fitting — provides the structural header the door swings from. Side and bottom rails are eliminated or reduced to narrow trim only. The glass becomes the dominant visual element, the bathroom reads as more open, and maintenance is far easier than a traditional framed door with its channels and crevices.

At Infinity Glass & Glazing, our semi-frameless enclosures are built the same way our frameless ones are: custom measured, in-house fabricated, and installed by our own crew. The same precision laser measurement. The same care in hardware selection. The same installation guarantee. The only difference is the configuration — and the price.

Glass cut and finished in our Corinth, TX shop. No third-party fabricators, no outsourced panels — just work we control from start to finish.

Installation Guarantee

If anything isn't right after installation, we come back and fix it. No runaround.

Semi-Frameless vs. Frameless — What's the Real Difference?

Both types use tempered safety glass as the primary structural element. The distinction lies in how the panels are supported.

In a fully frameless enclosure, the glass hangs from hinges attached directly to the wall or to an adjacent glass panel with no top or bottom rails at all. This requires thicker glass (typically 1/2") and more precise installation, but delivers the cleanest look possible.

Semi-frameless enclosures use a slim top channel or U-bar that the glass slides into, along with heavy-duty hinges on one side. This gives the system additional structural stability, allows the use of slightly thinner glass (3/8" is standard), and brings the cost down meaningfully without a significant visual trade-off.

For most bathroom renovations — especially in production homes and mid-range remodels — semi-frameless hits the sweet spot. It's the configuration we recommend most often to clients who want a real upgrade from a framed door but are working with a defined budget.

Custom Configurations: What We Can Build

Semi-frameless isn't a single product — it's a configuration category that covers a range of layouts. We build all of them.

The most common is a single swing door next to a fixed side panel, forming an inline or L-shaped entry. This works for standard alcove showers (the most common layout in DFW production homes) and for corner configurations.

We also build bypass and sliding semi-frameless systems for showers where a swing door isn't practical — over-tub enclosures, narrow alcoves, or bathrooms where clearance is tight. And for walk-in showers with an open entry, we can install a fixed panel with a return that deflects water without a swinging door at all.

Whatever your layout, we start with a precision measurement of your actual opening and fabricate the glass to fit. No cutting corners with standard sizes.

Hardware Finishes & Customization

Semi-frameless enclosures use the same hardware collection as our frameless options — hinges, handles, clips, and towel bars in brushed nickel, chrome, matte black, and oil-rubbed bronze.

The top rail itself can be finished to match your hardware selection, so the minimal framing that does exist coordinates with your fixtures rather than fighting them. If your bathroom has brushed nickel faucets and towel bars, we'll match that finish throughout the enclosure.

We carry a curated selection of handles and pulls — from streamlined contemporary bars to more traditional designs. Browse the options on our Services page, or visit our showroom in Corinth to see and feel the hardware in person before you decide.

How Semi-Frameless Compares on Cost

Semi-frameless shower doors typically run 20–35% less than an equivalent frameless configuration. For a standard 60" alcove shower with a single swing door and inline panel, a frameless enclosure might run $1,400–$2,200 while a semi-frameless version in the same layout runs $900–$1,600.

The savings come primarily from glass thickness (3/8" vs. 1/2") and reduced hardware complexity. The installation process, fabrication quality, and timeline are essentially identical.

We quote both options side by side when the configuration allows for it, so you can make an informed decision. Sometimes the gap is narrower than expected; sometimes the frameless option is clearly the right call for a high-end remodel.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much does a semi-frameless shower door cost in DFW?

Semi-frameless shower doors in DFW typically range from $700 to $2,200 depending on the configuration and hardware selection. A standard 60" alcove with a swing door and fixed panel usually runs $900–$1,400. Corner configurations with two glass panels run higher. We provide itemized quotes after your measurement.

Is semi-frameless or frameless better?

Both are significant upgrades over a standard framed door. Frameless delivers the cleanest aesthetic and is better for high-end remodels where the bathroom is a design centerpiece. Semi-frameless offers 80–90% of the visual benefit at 65–80% of the cost — it's the right call for most bathroom renovations where budget matters.

Can semi-frameless doors be installed on a tub?

Yes. Bypass (sliding) semi-frameless systems work well for over-tub installations. We custom-fabricate the panels to your tub's exact dimensions and fit the bottom sweep to your surround. We've done hundreds of over-tub enclosures across DFW.

How do I clean a semi-frameless shower door?

The top rail is the only area where water can pool, so a quick wipe-down after each use goes a long way. For the glass, a squeegee after each shower prevents most hard water buildup. Monthly cleaning with a non-abrasive glass cleaner (we recommend Rain-X shower door cleaner) keeps the glass crystal clear long-term. Avoid abrasive scrubbers.
