Frosted Shower Doors — Privacy Glass Without Losing the Light

Acid-etched is the standard and what we recommend for most bathrooms. The obscuring is chemical and runs through the treated face uniformly, so there is no pattern to align across panels and no coating to wear off. The surface is smooth to the touch, which matters more than it sounds — a smooth etched face sheds water and cleans much like clear glass.

Sandblasted glass is abraded rather than etched. It obscures similarly, but the surface is microscopically rougher, which means it holds soap film and hard-water minerals more readily. In DFW's water, that difference shows up within a year. We will quote it when a client specifically wants it, but acid-etched is the better-wearing product here.

Reeded and fluted glass is a different effect entirely — parallel vertical ridges that distort the view into bands rather than blurring it evenly. It is the fastest-growing privacy option in DFW renovations because it reads as a design choice rather than a modesty measure. Applied film is the cheapest route and the one we steer people away from: it is a surface layer, it can bubble and peel in a wet environment, and it does not survive aggressive cleaning.

Standard acid-etched glass obscures detail but not presence. From a few feet away you see a silhouette and movement, not features. That is the right level for the common cases — a shower visible from a bedroom doorway, a guest bath with an open sight line, a wet room where the shower faces the vanity.

For genuinely full obscuring, the options are a heavier etch, a double-sided treatment, or reeded glass with a deep profile. Each cuts more light in exchange for more privacy, and each costs more. Worth knowing before you specify: the more completely a panel obscures, the more it starts to behave like the tiled wall you were trying to avoid.

The practical middle ground most DFW clients land on is partial obscuring — clear glass on the upper portion for light, etched from roughly waist height down, or an etched band at eye level. It gives privacy where it matters and daylight where it does not, and it is straightforward to specify at order.

This is the most common question and the answer is genuinely reassuring: a properly acid-etched panel shows hard-water spotting less than clear glass, not more. The diffuse surface scatters light, so mineral deposits do not catch the eye the way they do against a clear pane.

The exception is texture. Reeded and fluted glass has grooves, and grooves collect soap scum and minerals in a way a flat face does not. On reeded panels the maintenance ask is real: squeegee along the grooves rather than across them, and expect to clean more often than you would a flat etched panel.

For any privacy glass in DFW, a hydrophobic coating applied at the time of order is worth considering. It is far more effective applied to new glass than added later to a panel that has already taken on mineral buildup — and in this water, that buildup starts early.

Privacy glass is a specification, not a separate product line. Anything we build in clear, we build in obscure: hinged doors, sliding and bypass systems, fixed walk-in panels, and neo-angle corner enclosures. The hardware, the mitered corners, and the installation are unchanged.

The most common request is a mixed enclosure — an etched door panel with clear fixed returns, or clear glass throughout with a single obscured panel on whichever side faces the room. Because every panel is ordered individually to your measurements, mixing specifications within one enclosure costs no more than the glass difference itself.

Where privacy glass earns its keep beyond the shower is in the rest of the bathroom: obscured window glass, an etched panel between a water closet and the main room, or a reeded partition on a wet-room layout. Those are the same materials, cut to different openings.
